"At Least You Have a Healthy Baby"

"My name is Meghan Rodberg. I had my first child vaginally in 1988, and was pitocin'd into a c-section with my second in 2000. I had an under-medicated surgery and was just sedated until I couldn't complain any more and just cried through it. I guess it's a pretty common story, so not much more to tell... it's unfortunately a scenario we've all heard a thousand times.

Gretchen Humpries wrote a long essay about the 'At least you have a healthy baby' thing and it really rang true for me [see You Should Be Grateful]. I've run across this attitude countless times and it's pretty infuriating and saddening. So I had the idea to do a series of photographs that expressed my feelings about the healthy baby line and my c-section.

After my c-section, and still 13 months later, I feel damaged. My body will never be the same, my trust in my body will never be the same, everything is changed and no amount of suturing can ever bring that back. That's what I wanted to express in the photos.

I'm a total amateur, but I think it gets the point across pretty well. Some of you may roll your eyes and that's fine, but I hope it speaks to some others like it did to me when I first pictured it in my mind." -Meghan
