Birth Videos

Birth Joy and Raspberry Leaves by Catherine Young of The Compleat Mother Magazine. This video has some of the most beautiful waterbirth footage I have ever seen. It is powerful, well-researched, definitive, and reasonably priced at $17 (Cdn.), plus $3 postage. It's payable through email by Visa. Email the Compleat Mother at zyoung@wcl.on.ca.

Recommended Books

"Understanding Diagnostic Tests in the Childbearing Years" by Anne Frye and Susun Weed's "Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year" are my bibles of midwifery. What one doesn't give you, the other does. Both these books are dog-eared and worn and I couldn't work without them." -Gloria Lemay, Vancouver, BC Canada

Leslie Laurence and Beth Weinhouse, "Outrageous Practices" (Fawcett/Columbine, 1994) The alarming truth about how medicine mistreats women. This includes references about the surgicalization of childbirth; it likens OBs preference toward surgery with the saying: "When you only have a hammer, everything looks like a nail." Order them from Kimberley Hudson and save money: only $15 per book.

Sheila Kitzinger, "Homebirth" (Dorling Kindersley, 1991) This book changed my life.

Jenni Overend, "Welcome With Love" (Kane/Miller Book Publishers, 2000) A beautiful book for children about homebirth. For a book review for "Welcome With Love" by LLM, go here.

Henci Goer, The Thinking Woman’s Guide to a Better Birth -this includes her chapter on dealing with long labors.

Pregnancy and Childbirth Tips by Gail J. Dahl. Accessible and practical.

Marsden Wagner, MD- "Pursuing the Birth Machine" (ACE Graphics,1994) The information in this book presents a serious indictment against the rampant use of technology in birth. The author- a neonatologist, perinatal epidemiologist, and former Director of Women's and Children's Health for the World Health Organization- is a big supporter of midwifery and homebirth.

Enkin, MW, Keirse MJNC, Renfrew M, Neilson J (1995). "A Guide to Effective Care in Pregnancy and Childbirth" (second edition), Oxford University Press.

Laura Shanley, "Unassisted Childbirth" (Bergin & Garvey, 1994) View her site.

Jeannine Parvati Baker, "Prenatal Yoga and Natural Birth" (Freestone Pub., 1974) View her site.

Natalie Angier, "The Beauty of the Beastly" (Houghton Mifflin Co., 1996) Illuminates readers on the beauty of oxytocin, and includes a revolutionary theory on the true purpose of menstruation.

Mary Daly, "Gyn/Ecology, the Metaethics of Radical Feminism" (Beacon Pr. 1990) This "Positively Revolting Hag" shares her extensive research on female genital mutilation, and writes fiercely enough to send women rioting in the streets.

Goer, H (1994). "Obstetric Myths Versus Research Realities" (Don Creevy)

Jared Diamond, "The Third Chimpanzee" (Harperperennial Library,1993) A brilliant book on the brilliance of evolution; includes a brief study of human sexuality from the perspectives of evolutionary psychology and biology.

Robert S. Mendelsohn, MD- "MalePractice- How Doctors Manipulate Women" (Contemporary Books, Inc. 1981) A shocking and often heartbreaking exposé of common obstetrical practices and their true origins: institutionalized chauvinism and violence against women.

Lynne Mc Taggart, "What Doctors Don't Tell You" -recommended by a medical student.
